Dororo: Never Got The Flowers It Deserves
A Semi Dark Fantasy
Last week I wrote about some of my favorite underrated anime that I’ve watched over the years since I started my anime journey.
Dororo is probably my favorite out of the entire list and I genuinely believe that it didn’t get the flowers that it deserves.
I’m here today to persuade you all to check this one out so without further ado let’s get into it:
Dororo is a 2019 anime television series based on the manga of the same name by Osamu Tezuka. The series tells the story of Hyakkimaru, a young man who was born without any limbs, organs, or skin due to a deal his father made with demons.
Hyakkimaru was found as a baby, abandoned in a forest by a doctor known as Jukai who took pity on him and decided to raise him on his own. The doctor also created prosthetics for him through using wood and metal.
Hyakkimaru sets out on a journey to defeat the demons and reclaim his body parts, and along the way he is joined by Dororo, a young orphan theif who helps him on his quest.
One of the most striking aspects of Dororo is its well-crafted storyline. The show does an excellent job of keeping the audience engaged with its consistent pacing and well-timed plot twists. The series is riddled with dark themes, exploring concepts of sacrifice, power, and greed.
Another impressive feature of Dororo is its animation style. The show features a unique, hand-drawn animation style, giving it an authentic, old-school feel. The fight scenes are intense and well-choreographed, accompanied by a stunning soundtrack that elevates the viewing experience.
One of my favorite things about Dororo is how he deals with regaining his humanity and emotions as he defeats these demons and starts to gain his body, heart, mind, and soul back.
Here are some of the interesting themes that are presented throughout the show:
Revenge: Hyakkimaru is driven by a desire for revenge against his father, who sacrificed his body parts to demons in exchange for power. However, as he travels with Dororo, he begins to question whether revenge is truly the answer.
Redemption: Hyakkimaru eventually learns that he can only find peace by forgiving everyone including himself and moving on with his life. This is a powerful message that shows that revenge is not the answer to our problems.
The nature of good and evil: The show explores the nature of good and evil by presenting us with a variety of characters who are not easily categorized as either good or evil. For example, Hyakkimaru is a hero who is driven by a desire for revenge, while Dororo is a thief who is often selfish and reckless. These characters challenge our traditional notions of good and evil and show us that the world is not always black and white.
If you’re a fan of dark fantasy type series then I definitely reccomend that you watch Dororo. The anime is only 24 episodes but the story, characters, and themes manage to keep your complete attention.
Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s article. Feel free to share it if you’d like and consider subscribing to support me, I would greatly appreciate it. I’ll catch you all next week!
