Dr. Stone: Anime Makes Science Fun
Imagine one day everyone in the world is turned to stone and someone breaks out almost 4000 years later. This is the premise of Dr. Stone, a story created by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi. The manga debuted on March, 6th 2017 and the anime’s first season came out on July 5th, 2019. The story follows our main protagonist Senku Ishigami who is a prodigal genius high school student who wakes up 3700 years after the worldwide petrification of humanity. With his exceptional knowledge of science, Senku sets out to rebuild the entirety of civilization from scratch. This is a story about science, survival, and creation so as we get started I’d like to welcome you all to Dr. Stone.
Dr. Stone is a one-of-a-kind series in the sense that it blends science and adventure to create a unique experience for the audience. The story is packed with scientific concepts and theories that are cohesively explained in an entertaining way. This can be seen from the beginning when Senku ends up finding some of his friends Taiju and Yuzuriha that have also broken out of the petrification. Senku and his friends have to survive in the wild which leads to them spending months building just the bare basics to stay alive. Along with this, Senku begins to develop a cure so that other people can be freed from their stone shells. What makes Dr. Stone interesting is that freeing all people might not be the most ideal scenario.
This sets the scene for the main antagonist of Dr. Stone Tsukasa. When Senku first frees Tsukasa from petrification, he seems friendly and helps Senku and his friends with various tasks such as hunting. However, once Tsukasa finds out that Senku has a cure for petrification and wants to free all of humanity he shows his true colors. Tsukasa’s ideals are different from Senku’s and he believes that there are villains in this world who don’t deserve to be saved. Tsukasa wants to create a world where the youth are the ones that have the power and he has the perfect stage to free those he deems worthy to create his own personal empire in this stone age.
The question you’re probably asking is “if this is a series about science and rebuilding civilization with an antagonist then how do battle sequences work?”. With science of course! With the help of his friends, Senku creates the technology he needs to fight his battles. I believe Dr. Stone is a series that’s worth checking out. Not only does it have a unique storyline but it also has unique character designs, solid animation, breathtaking landscapes, and a dynamic cast of characters. It leaves you with many questions from the get-go that will eventually get answered in upcoming seasons or are already answered in the manga which is currently finished. Whether you're a science geek or just looking for an engaging and exciting show to watch, Dr. Stone is sure to impress. So grab some popcorn, settle in, and get ready to be transported to a world of science and wonder.
