Is Fire Force Worth Your Time?
Fire, flames, and spontaneous human combustion that turns people into monsters known as infernals. If I had to sum up Fire Force in one word it would be ‘unique’. The main concept of this show is to fight fire with fire as the name entails. Fire Force is a manga series written by Atsushi Ohkubo who was the author of another popular series known as Soul Eater. The manga was adopted into an anime by David Production Studios and the first season aired in 2019. The series immensely grew in popularity for having an interesting plotline, story, and power system. Today I’ll be giving you a basic synopsis of Fire Force and giving you an overview of both the positive as well as negative aspects of the show and if it’s worth watching.
The show follows the story of Shinra Kusakabe, a third-generation pyrokinetic who joins the Fire Force, a special team of firefighters tasked with fighting against a mysterious phenomenon known as "spontaneous human combustion" that turns people into infernals. Although it seems like this is a natural phenomenon at first that happens in the world of Fire Force, we quickly learn that there’s an evil organization pulling the strings causing random people to burst into flames and turn into infernals.
These antagonists are known as the White-Clad, a cult-like organization that seeks to uncover the secrets of Adolla Burst, an otherworldly power that allows certain individuals to manipulate flames in a way that's beyond the capabilities of normal pyrokinetics. The White-Clads aim is to bring about the Great Cataclysm, an event that would destroy the world and allow a new one to be reborn in its place. The organization is made up of powerful pyrokinetics, each with their own unique abilities. The leader of this organization is known as The Evangelist of who little is known about but she is believed to possess immense power and knowledge of Adolla Burst.
Let’s get into the positive and negative aspects of this show from the two seasons of the anime that are out so far.
The Positives ( + ):
Stunning Animation and Visual Effects: Fire Force is visually stunning, with crisp animation and top-notch visual effects. The flames and explosions are beautifully rendered, and the fight scenes are a feast for the eyes. The show's attention to detail is also commendable, from the intricate character designs to the detailed backgrounds.
Engaging Plot: The premise of Fire Force is unique and engaging, with a complex world and atmosphere that keeps the audience invested. The mystery surrounding spontaneous human combustion and the truth behind the antagonists’ motives keep the audience looking for the answers to their questions.
Exciting Action Sequences: Fire Force is an action-packed anime that delivers thrilling and intense fight scenes. The show's pyrokinetic powers are used creatively in battles, making for some truly epic moments.
The Negatives ( - ):
Inconsistent Pacing: While Fire Force's plot is engaging, the pacing can be uneven at times. Some episodes feel rushed, while others drag on for too long. This inconsistency can be frustrating for viewers who want a more cohesive narrative.
Lack of Character Development: Despite having a large cast of characters, Fire Force struggles with character development. Many characters feel one-dimensional, with little depth or backstory. Some characters are introduced and then quickly forgotten, leaving viewers wondering why they were included in the first place.
Fanservice: Fire Force has been criticized for its use of fanservice, particularly in the first few episodes. Some viewers feel that the show's oversexualization of its female characters is unnecessary and detracts from the overall experience.
There are currently 2 seasons of Fire Force out right now with a season 3 announced but nowhere near in sight. While the negative aspects of the show can be an annoyance sometimes, Fire Force is a show that I think is worth watching. Not only is the story flushed out and engaging, but the show is so visually appealing. The lighting, colors, animation, and visuals are a treat to the eyes. This anime looks good on any screen you watch it on. In conclusion, if you’re willing to overlook the shows minor shortcomings, it’s worth the time to sit down, grab some snacks, and binge.
