Kuroko no Basket: Basketball with Hax
Basketball with superpowers. Sounds fun right? Let me preface this with the fact that Kuroko no Basket is a sports anime that is not meant to be taken seriously. If you’re reading this and thinking of watching it just remember this is more of a fun series to put on if you want to shut off your brain. There are some moments in this anime that might make you laugh just because of how over-the-top the characters and abilities are. Once there was a group of five prodigal basketball players in middle school known as the “Generation of Miracles” that split to go to different high schools. What most people didn’t know was that there was a phantom sixth man who kept the gears running for the team to earn their revered status. This story is about that man and how he triumphs over the other five and makes it to the national tournament with his team in high school.
Kuroko no Basket starts with our two main characters Tetsuya Kuroko and Taiga Kagami signing up to join the basketball team at Seirin High School. Kuroko as you’ve probably figured out by now is that phantom sixth man that was in the “Generation of Miracles”. Kuroko has exceptionally high intelligence and passing skills and can utilize these to his max ability. Kagami on the other hand is a naturally talented basketball player who spent much of his youth in the US and has powerful jumping abilities along with his unyielding drive to become better with each shot he takes. Kuroko and Kagami form a relationship and aim for nationals by taking on Kuroko’s former teammates one by one. The characters of the “Generation of Miracles” include Ryota Kise, Shintaro Midorima, Atsushi Murasakibara, Daiki Aomine, and Seijuro Akashi. These five have insane abilities that Kuroko and Kagami have to surpass to win.
I’ll briefly explain the abilities of the “Generation of Miracles”: Ryota Kise can recreate a more than perfect copy of any technique he sees. Midorima can produce a shot from any location on the court and make it. Murasakibara is monstrously tall and has a perfect defense not allowing anything or anyone to get past him. Aomine, a fan favorite, was known as the ace of the “Generation of Miracles” and has high speed, agility, and can change the pace of his play easily which throws his opponents off. Lastly, we have Akashi who was the captain/leader of the “Generation of Miracles” and has an ability known as the “Emperor Eye” which can predict the future along with having raw undefeated talent. They are all monstrous in their own right and a few can even enter what’s known as “The Zone” which is a broken technique that can enhance their already broken abilities and give them the focus + drive to win no matter what.
Kuroko’s Basketball was the first sports anime that I watched and even though there are better sports series out there, this was a good starting point. I’ve only ever watched two other sports anime those being Haikyuu which is a men’s volleyball series and the other being Blue Lock which is an anime about soccer. I never got around to finishing Haikyuu and Blue Lock is currently ongoing but look forward to my thoughts on those series at a later date. That’s it from me today if you’re still interested in watching an anime about playing basketball then go watch some badass characters shoot some hoops. Thank you for reading and I’ll see you all next week!
