Oshi no Ko: First Impressions

Exploded In Popularity So Fast

If you’re someone who’s into anime you’ve probably heard of Oshi no Ko by now. It’s taken the anime community by storm and from what I’ve seen so far, it’s something special.

The first episode of Oshi no Ko released on April 12, 2023 and everyone was took by surprise because it was an entire hour & a half episode which is relatively rare even when it comes to new anime releases.

I think the first episode set up the plot, characters, and storyline perfectly and left viewers waiting for the next episode.

Let’s get into my first impressions of this brand new anime that’s exploded in popularity.

To give a breif synopsis of the anime without spoiling anything, Oshi no Ko is about showing the honest side of the idol and acting industry.

The show doesn’t shy away from taking a view at the dark side of these industries which is what makes it unique. However, it also shows the beauty and passion that can be found in being an idol or going into acting.

There’s a reason so many people are drawn to these careers even in the real world but only a select few make it in.

I’d say Oshi no Ko definitely has a unique blend of genres put into one anime. It’s part drama, part supernatural fiction, part murder mystery, and also has comedic elements to it.

Even within the first episode, you feel connected to the main characters that are introduced such as Ai Hoshino, Aqua, and Ruby. Even the side characters play an important role in supporting the storyline of the main characters.

Speaking of the story, from the moment you hit play on the episode, the hour and a half passes by real quick and leaves you wanting more.

One criticism that I have about Oshi no Ko so far is the sudden shift in atmosphere from the first half of the episode to the second half. The first half is more lighthearted & comedic while the second half is a lot more serious & suspenseful.

What I Liked:

  • Unique blend of drama, supernatural fiction, & murder mystery genre

  • The well-developed & likeable characters

  • The beautiful art & animation

  • The honest look at the world of the acting & idol industries

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The sudden shift in atmosphere between the first & second half of the episode

When I first looked at the cover for Oshi no Ko, I misjudged it as something that wasn’t going to be to my liking. For some reason, I decided to give it a chance & I’m glad that I did.

Oshi no Ko deserves a chance & there’s a reason why it’s one of the most popular anime this spring season.
