Your Lie In April: Love, Music, and Heartbreak
I was probably 16 or 17 when I came across Your Lie In April and was still relatively new to anime and its various genres.
Before I watched Your Lie In April (YLIA), I only used to watch anime of the shounen (action) genre but this was the series that changed that for me.
Your Lie In April can be classified as a slice of life/romance anime, the first time I came across the series it intrigued me because of how colorful the cover looked.
Little did I know how much I would fall in love with the characters and how much it would break my heart. Let’s talk about the series that shattered my heart into pieces.
Your Lie In April is about Kousei Arima, one of our main characters who was a prodigy at playing the piano but lost his ability to play due to a traumatic event in his childhood, and Kaori Miyazono who’s an eccentric violin player.
Their paths cross when both of them needed it the most. Kousei always used to play the piano without any emotion or feeling to it, he used to play just because his abusive mother knew that he was a piano prodigy from a young age and he wanted to make her proud of him someday.
Kousei’s mother ended up passing away when he was eleven years old and after the event, he abandoned playing the piano for good until he met Kaori.
We immediately fall in love with Kaori as a character, she’s fun, kind, loving, caring, and puts all her heart and soul into playing the violin. She’s exactly the type of person Kousei needs to bring the light and color back into his world.
Kousei spends most of his time with his two closest friends, Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryota Watari.
During the series we see a love triangle going on between our four main characters. Tsubaki likes Kousei while Kousei likes Kaori and Kaori likes Watari at least at the beginning.
As we see Kousei and Kaori spend more time together as the series goes on we can see how much of a connection they have and how much they mean to each other.
Even though Kaori seems bright and carefree on the outside, she is hiding her own painful secret. Kaori eventually reveals to her friends that she is anemic and has to be hospitalized for routine testing.
From that point out Kousei’s and Kaori’s relationship blossoms into a story of love, music, pain, and heartbreak.
I truly believe Your Lie In April is a series you come across once in a decade and since airing in 2015, it deserves all the praise it gets. The series is genuinely worth the watch and no amount of words I write on this post will do it justice.
Now, go watch the series that broke the hearts of millions in the best and worst way possible.
